Early Intervention programs: These programs are designed to address foundational issues before the child experiences failure

Intervention programs: Potential students are those (2nd grade through adult)  who are experiencing obvious frustration in areas of school performance. Poor spelling, illegible handwriting, inability to express thoughts verbally or in writing, and difficulty with reading and math are common indicators of a learning disability. Learning disabilities are diagnosed through a battery of tests that measure and compare students’ potential with their actual performance. NILD Educational Therapists work in conjunction with qualified examiners and can assist parents in completing appropriate psychological and educational assessments.

Educators and Parents: Parents often know that there is more to their child than what is demonstrated in their academic environment. Teachers also can be puzzled when an obviously bright child can't seem to keep up. We offer workshops for parents, as well as educators, to help them understand why the student may be struggling, as well as what they can do to help. Contact us for more information or to schedule a workshop with your school or organization.

  • Two methods of intervention address the educational needs of students with learning disabilities:

Compensation

The goal of compensation is to modify the student's environment in order to make education more accessible. Examples of compensation are tutoring (filling in gaps in information), books on tape, getting copies of class notes, special seating, extended time, etc.

Deficit Stimulation

The goal of deficit stimulation is to modify the student. The focus is on developing clear and efficient thinking that then enables the student to improve basic learning skills so they can learn and retain content. It is developing the skills necessary to learn.

Both approaches are generally necessary in dealing effectively with a learning difficulties. Compensation allows students to succeed academically until the necessary skills are developed for independence. Deficit stimulation allows students to gain the skills needed to become independent learners for a lifetime.

The National Institute for Learning Development (NILD) offers programs that very effectively address the underlying issues of the struggling learner. Discovery Program of SC offers these services through a variety of academic and cognitive programs for students throughout the school year and during the summer. Services are conveniently available through a local learning development center or through partnership with private schools. Programs of specific educational intervention include the following:

Educational Therapy for students second grade to adult
SEARCH & TEACH for K-5 to first grade
FIE - Basic for 3-5 year olds
Skill Based Interventions for students 6 years to adult
